Friday Night Foyle’s War Club: “They Fought in the Fields”

Club notes:

I am delighted to report that despite being busy skiing all day in the Swiss Alps and enjoying the wonderful combination of late snow and sun, The Graf von Blommehön (Chairman),Lady Sebright and Colonel Pyncheon have not forgotten the members of our International Friday Night Foyle’s War Club.

On Wednesday, I took receipt of a postcard from them all which I take great pleasure in reproducing for you here:

Postcard from Club Members in Verbier:

verbier.jpg

It looks beautiful, doesn’t it?

The back of the postcard says, ‘Dear Virtual and Actual Members of the I.F.N.F.W.C, We missed our session last week and shall be thinking of you on Friday night and hoping you all enjoy the next episode. While DCS Foyle is investigating and solving crime in Hastings, we shall be having supper at ‘Le Caveau’ in the Place Centrale. I am going to share a chili fondue with Col. Pyncheon and Lady S is going to order raclette. We’re having a great time and shall be back Sunday afternoon. Best wishes to all, the Graf.’

It is the Graf’s birthday on Sunday – Lady Egality and I should make him a Foyle’s War cake!

Re Last Week’s ‘An Impasse’ Appeal:

Digby D (a virtual member) has come up with 2 thoughts as to how we might persuade Sir Plym and the Agent to eschew the Ox and Moose and join our Club. He suggests:

Perhaps you should reach out to the Ox and Moose and suggest that the way for them to expand business would be to host an extension of the Foyle’s Club on Friday nights on their large screen television in the bar. With a little advertising there would surely be a rush of extra customers. Alternatively, perhaps Sir Pym and the Agent are really subtly hinting that they would like something more fortifying served at Club gatherings than tea (whether with or without a warmed pot) – although as I thought the Agent was strictly teetotal, perhaps it is Sir Pym who needs convincing?

Having considered the above, Lady Egality and I have both admitted we have qualms about watching F.W. in the Ox and Moose Bar. Neither of us can imagine being able to concentrate properly as the bar stools and chairs are a little hard. However, we both see the point about the idea of serving a really fortifying drink.

Club Minutes:

Apologies: The Graf (Chairman), Lady Sebright and Colonel Pyncheon (see above).

Attendees: (Virtual): Martha from America, MohairMK, Kitchentease, C. Nelson, Digby D and ayresorchids.  (Actual):, Lady Egality (Treasurer) Lady Liberty (Club Secretary).

Venue:  Castle Coop and various international locations.

Announcements:

1. Lady Liberty was very sorry to hear that MohairMK was sick last week and hopes a good recovery has been made. Lady Liberty would also like to thank ayresorchids for the kindly concern expressed about her solitary status last week. I must admit, it will be jollier watching tonight as Lady E will be with me.

2. As a nod to our absent friends in Switzerland (and as a dress-rehearsal for the fortifying drink idea) Lady Egality and I  shall be drinking Gluhwein tonight and eating Basler Läckerli (a traditional hard spice biscuit originating from BaselSwitzerlandmade of honey, hazelnutscandied peel, and Kirsch), while watching tonight’s episode. Doesn’t that sound scrumptious?

3. A reminder to all Club Members – virtual and actual: don’t forget to place a Foyle’s War picture in the room where you are attending the meeting.  For our one tonight, I’ve chosen to frame one of Foyle, Milner and Sam standing next to their official police car! Sam and Sgt. M. look rather serious but Foyle is clealy feeling on top of the case because he has his hands in his pockets.

4. N.B. If anyone reading this post should care to join the International Friday Night Foyle’s War Club as a Virtual Member, we should all be delighted to welcome them. Please apply for membership in the comment box below.

Tonight we shall be watching Episode 3, Series 3: ‘They Fought in the Fields’

They Fought in the Fields:

Three Luftwaffe airmen are captured after an air raid. However, there are irregularities considering the crew of the bomber and the condition of the parachutes. Meanwhile, feeling that she is not doing enough for the war effort, Sam joins the Land Girlsworking in the fields.

An Exerpt:

www.imdb.com highlights this bit of the screenplay:

(Foyle has just caught a murderer in a POW camp and is speaking with the camp’s chief interrogator)

Major Cornwall: I’ve always tried to see the best in people, and we’ve had good results with the prisoners. Quite a number have already opened up to us. You see, I spent a year at university in Heidelberg before the war. I always found the Germans to be a civilized and gracious race.

DCS Christopher Foyle: Ah… You ever played football against them?

Major Cornwall: Football? No. Cricket’s my game. There’s a disappointing dearth of cricket pitches in Heidelberg.

DCS Christopher Foyle: I was in a police team that played in Germany in ’36. The German team that met us were very smart, hospitable, very gracious, very civilized. Wonderful night – they wined and dined us, and we all left the Bierkeller at dawn, and we staggered onto the pitch later that day badly hung over. But the German team that ran on to play us were 11 totally different men, who’d been in bed before 10:00, not touched a drop, and we got a complete stuffing. They used different rules. But if we don’t want to lose this war, I think first of all, we’ve even got to be sure about what game they’re playing. And you’re right… it’s not cricket.

Yours, feeling confident that DCS Foyle will keep a straight bat at all times,

  1. What a wonderful final para from DCS Foyle. Rule Britannia I say.

    • I am sure Foyle would have loved that photo of Sir Plym wicket-keeping at Lords!

  2. Plym here, responding to the idea that the agent and I should forsake the Ox and Moose on a Friday evening for the Club. I am quite partial to Foyle’s War and have a particularly soft spot for Sam but I have to say that Friday night at the O&M is a very longstanding commitment and it would be disloyal of me to desert the friends who regularly gather there. Thanks to Diggy D (if he can mis-spell my name, so will I mis-spell his as a timely reminder that I’m a sensitive soul) for his thoughts on this subject and particularly for the acknowledgement that a cup of tea would never persuade the Agent or me to lose our interest in a few cleansing ales.

    • The Agent applauds your principles. He says he would be rude to renege on a long-standing/long-accepted invitation to the O and M just because our Foyle’s War Club invitation sounds so good.

  3. But did the Agent make an appearance?

    • NO. He said he doesn’t like Gluhwein. We’re going to have to try something else. BTW, please tell Billy that I’ve been for a bike ride and used several gears.

  4. Registering for tonight’s meeting, wouldn’t miss it! They Fought In The Fields is one of my favorite episodes!

    • I agree; v. good to see you virtually each Friday!
