The Friday Night Foyle’s War Club: The Eternity Ring

Club notes: The Committee of The Friday Night Foyle’s War Club would all like to be sitting outside on a beautiful balmy summer’s evening. Unfortunately, it is cold, miserable and un-summery outside. Inside it’s almost as bad as the Aga has been turned off and the house feels cold, miserable and un-summery. Thank goodness for the Friday Night Foyle’s War Club which will cheer up the Actual Members of the committee no end. Hurrah!

Club Minutes:

Apologies: The Graf (Chairman) Attendees: (Virtual): Martha from America, MohairMK, Kitchentease, C. Nelson, Digby D, ayresorchids, Miss Peppermint, British Detectives from America and (we hope) SingleMotherAhoy.  (Actual): ) Lady Egality (Club Treasurer), Lady Liberty (Club Secretary) Lady Sebright and Colonel Pyncheon

Venue:  Castle Coop and various international locations.

Announcements:

1. Tonight will be a focused meeting; Colonel Pyncheon and Lady Sebright went up to London last night for an Installation Dinner at The Mansion House and want a quiet night this evening. They arrived back in Castle Coop frightfully late as the trains were all tangled up and delayed and Lady S  is feeling a bit worn out now. This morning, she brought round Colonel Pyncheon’s Place Card for Lady Egality and me to admire:

place card 2.jpgThe two men in their jolly blue and red outfits, are standing on their Livery Company’s Motto, ‘ Amore Sitis Uniti ‘ which translates as ‘Be United in Love’. Lady Sebright told us the Livery Men have been aiming to be united in love ever since the seventeenth century and their Company  has exercised control over prices, wages, disputes and the maintenance of standards of quality from Charles 11’s reign right up to the present day! Apparently there were gleaming Chains of Office nestling on top of fur-lined Robes absolutely everywhere in the extremely splendid Salon of The Mansion House –  left, right and centre – and  the supper was delicious!

The Lord Mayor ( the Alderman Fiona Woolf CBE)  made a speech giving a helpful pointer for anyone in a muddle about the difference between the 2 London Mayors – the Lord Mayor of London goes to the hairdresser but  the Mayor of London (BoJo) doesn’t.

 Tea and Biscuits!

2. As last night Lady S and the Colonel were eating haute cuisine, tonight we decided not to even try to compete. We shall be drinking tea and eating Bourbon biscuits which I nipped out earlier to buy at the Coop. For any of our Virtual Members who have not come across them, as far as biscuits go, Bourbons are scrummy. Yum

3. A reminder to all Club Members – don’t forget to place a Foyle’s War picture in the room where you are attending the meeting.

The Eternity Ring:

Tonight the International Friday Night Foyle’s War Club will be watching:

Episode 1 , Series 7*: ‘The Eternity Ring!

Plot:

1945:- A group of scientists observe the testing of an atomic bomb at Los Alamos in the New Mexico desert. A year later Foyle is approached by Hilda Pierce, now working for MI5. Her boss Sir William Chambers explains that a Russian defector,Gorin, has supplied them with news of the Eternity Ring,a group of Soviet sympathisers bent on betraying Britain’s atomic secrets. Sam is now working as a secretary to Professor Fraser, one of the suspects who was present at Los Alamos and Foyle meets up with her, being introduced to Fraser and his colleague Max Hoffman,a Polish communist who escaped Nazi persecution. Both work at Armwell Atomic Research Station. Hoffman connects Sam to Foyle and she is sacked but when uranium is stolen from Armwell and the thief murdered she joins Foyle in investigating the Eternity Ring – as well as helping husband Adam stand for election as a Labour MP. Written by don @ minifie-1http://www.imdb.com/

*N.B. The Episode categorisation is a complete muddle – The I.F.N.F.W.C. Committee has decided for clarity’s sake to categorise each episode as it is named on the ‘Foyle’s War: The Complete Collection’ dvd disc set. Wikipedia however, categorises ‘The Eternity Ring’ as Episode 1, Series 8

What would DCS Foyle’s motto in life be do you think?  Never Give Up?.. Fight for Right? .. Fishing and a small glass of whisky settle the mind?…..

Yours, wondering if it’s fun to be Lord Mayor of London and to have a motto…

  1. By the way, looking forward to an update on the Coop decision on fundraising possibilities. I gather the Americans are having their baseball All Star game today with festivities going over several days including a Home Run derby. Perhaps Castle Coop could have a cricket match with sponsorship for every run scored by the Agent and Sir Plym off each other’s bowling?

    • that’s genius!

  2. Just wondering if you have seen today’s Financial Times, which features a piece on bicycling in the Hebrides. Thought it would encourage you!

    • Oh no I haven’t & I need encouragement as I’m feeling daunted. It’s been a bad week. I shall look asap. It sounds rather hilly!
