Announcements:

1.Lady Liberty (Secretary) would like to thank our Treasurer, Lady Egality, for so ably Guest Posting and Hosting last week’s meeting. The Wimbledon-themed evening with strawberries and cream and champagne was deemed to be a great success and Lady Liberty was sorry to have missed out.

2. Lady Liberty (Secretary) is delighted to report that she was contacted earlier this week by SingleMotherAhoy who comments, “I have never watched Foyle’s War, despite harbouring a rather inappropriate crush on Horowitz. Am thinking if you are into it enough to have a club for watching, perhaps I should get in on the act? ”

LLH would like to formally extend an invitation to SingleMotherAhoy to become a virtual member of the International Friday Night Foyle’s War Club immediately!.

It’s Independence Day! Hurrah!

3. During tonight’s episode, the Committee will be thinking of all those of our fellow (virtual) members who are celebrating 4th July !

O say can you see by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave,
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

In honour of Independence Day (and please note, we’re just going to gloss over the bit about exactly whom America decided to sever her connections with and why) Lady Egality and I spent a happy morning with Google, trying to find suitable ways to salute the Land of the Free. Click on this link  for all sorts of patriotic sounding July 4th Drinks; it’s where we found the recipe for the drink we decided to go for :

4th of July Watermelon Cocktail

7 1/2 pounds seedless watermelon, rind removed, fruit cut into 1-inch cubes 4 teaspoons superfine sugar 8 ounces silver tequila 12 basil leaves 12 mint leaves 2.5 ounces Cointreau 6 cups ice

Make watermelon ice cubes by putting 24 pieces of cubed watermelon on a baking sheet lined with wax paper. Freeze for one hour, covered.

Take the rest of the watermelon plus the sugar and puree until smooth. Strain into a bowl. Put the tequila, basil and mint in a pitcher and muddle. Then stir in Cointreau and watermelon puree. Pour mixture into cocktail shaker with ice and mix for each cocktail. Put watermelon ice cubes in a glass and pour cocktail in. Garnish with herb sprigs and enjoy!

Doesn’t that sound delicious? Lady E and I made the watermelon ice cubes this afternoon so as to be all ready to go! (recipe source:www.drinkoftheweek.com )

As American as …

The Actual Members shall be serving our watermelon cocktails ( RED) with slices of Apple Pie with cream (WHITE) to continue tonight’s Americana theme . As we can’t think of any thing blue to eat, Lady Sebright is bringing a big jug of bachelor’s buttons  (BLUE) with which to decorate the table.

3. A reminder to all Club Members – don’t forget to place a Foyle’s War picture in the room where you are attending the meeting.

Our one for tonight shows 3 American Soldiers  stationed in an airbase in Hastings who came up against DCS Foyle , Sergeant Milner and Sam Stewart in ‘Invasion’ (Series Four)

The Hide:

Tonight the International Friday Night Foyle’s War Club will be watching:

Episode 4 , Series 6*: ‘The Hide!

Plot:

DCS Foyle is replaced and is free at last – he’s resigned his position and planning to travel to the United States for an extended tour. Before departing however, he’s asked to look into the case of James Devereaux, a young man who joined the Nazi British Free Corps during the war. He was taken prisoner by the Germans and refuses to explain to anyone, including Foyle, why he agreed to join the Free Corps in the first place. In a related case, DI Paul Milner investigates the murder of Agnes Littleton who was strangled with a nylon stocking. The woman worked as a secretary for James’ father, Sir Charles Devereaux. Agnes was living with the Devereaux’s now retired cook, Mrs. Ramsay and from all accounts was quite happy there. She also had a friend named Jack who did something hush hush during the war. A case of mistaken identity and events from James’ childhood are key to solving the mystery. Sam Stewart and her friend Adam Wainwright meanwhile have lost the support of the bank who have refused to increase Adam’s overdraft. In fact they’ve asked him to pay what he owes forthwith. The news that developers may want to buy the property doesn’t provide much solace as the proposed new development would destroy the village green, something Adam and Sam decide they will work against.Written by garykmcd http://www.imdb.com/

*N.B. The Episode categorisation is a complete muddle – The I.F.N.F.W.C. Committee has decided for clarity’s sake to categorise each episode as it is named on the ‘Foyle’s War: The Complete Collection’ dvd disc set. Wikipedia however, categorises ‘The Hide’ as Episode 4, Series 7

Mr. Foyle is never wrong. Spot on!

Having noted that SingleMotherAhoy has not yet seen an episode of Foyle’s War, Lady Liberty is delighted to reproduce this snippet of dialogue from ‘The Hide’.

In 5 words, Mr. Wainwright encapsulates the central tenet of the programme. Nothing more needs to be said.

Dialogue:

Samantha Stewart: Perhaps Mr. Foyle was wrong about the settlement.

Adam Wainwright: Mr. Foyle is never wrong.

  1. Just remembering a very lovely July 4th I spent with you a few years back! Glad to see you continue to embrace the patriotic spirit sans American company.

    • Oh that’s so kind of you! Spending July 4th in Oman must have been quite an amazing experience- looking forward to hearing all about it!

  2. P.S. you could have added blueberries to your Red, White And Blue theme!

    • Why didn’t Lady E and I think of blueberries! When I tell Lady E, she will be as horrified at how dim we’ve been as I am. And blueberries are so delicious!Still, the bachelor’s buttons looked very pretty on the table next to the picture!

  3. Looking forward to this, The Hide is my favorite episode!!

    • That poor new Sergeant’s face when Foyle wishes Milner good bye and good luck, saying, ‘You’re on your own now’! – what a great line! And how perfect that Sam has 4 vicars and a bishop in her family. Yay for them all!

  4. Thanks for the Independence Day wishes, luvs! Hope you loved “The Hide” as much as I do. If you’ve any interest in reading a fanfic based on it, check out the story “The Long Shadow” at fanfiction dot net. (I shall try to leave a link, but I’m never sure if that sort of thing works in comment boxes.)
